Exo needs to send suggested Theme and Topics for the 2016 program to EK – possibly “NEW”? Continue with Case study presentations

3.            Annual Financial Statements by George Nel

R 1.5 million cash on hand. Financial Statement 2014 has been signed off (year on year income and expenditure pattern similar).

4.             Items for discussion

  • Drive membership especially Fellows and recently qualified cardiologist. KS and SK supply names of their Fellows to be approached to join. Office will request support from other HODs as well. GN mentioned that GP tend not to pay-up or renew and should rather not be targeted for membership.
  • SHARE HF – Need to establish a compelling reason(s) for data entry. EK propose that device therapy (CRTd / CRCTp) with link to reimbursement (such as TAVI) should be explored. Need to consolidate existing funder approval forms (and even chronic form) into one document to add most benefit to operators.

  • HF Burden / Prevalence in SA - Proposed Snapshot survey across the country on a single day. Include PVT and Public. KS has examples of the type of questionnaire and methodology used. Annual audit could also be considered during Heart month.  Roll-out in 2017.

  • Educational:

GP HF Educational Programs / Cardio Update

The HeFSSA Practitioners Programcontinues to be well received by the medical community as well as the pharmaceutical and device industry and remains an important educational vehicle.

13 South Africa meetings, 1 Namibia meeting with 410+ delegates where held (incl. Funders/MHC/Case Managers/Fellows and Pharmacists). Actual attendance overall was 84% with an overall average of 30 delegates per meeting.

The theme for 2015 was Women and Heart Failure and the topics were: Implantable devices, women and heart failure; Peri-partum cardiomyopathy; Hypertension in pregnancy and Elderly women with Heart Failure.  The case based talks for this year’s program were compiled by Eric Klug, Andrew Asherson, Len Steingo and Karen Sliwa.  3 extra CPD points for completing online questionnaire was awarded.

This year’s meetings were held in Johannesburg, Windhoek, East Rand, Nelspruit, East - London, Rustenburg, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Durban, Potchefstroom, George and Pretoria.

In addition, an “African Outreach” took place in Maputo, Mozambique on 30 March with approximately 100 attendees where Karen Sliwa represented HeFSSA.  This was HeFSSA / PASCAR collaboration together with the local Mozambique Cardiac Society.

This program is in its 6th consecutive year and continues to be generously supported by industry; Amayeza, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Pharma Dynamics and Servier.

SA Heart Congress 2015 / 2016

HeFSSA was involved with the SA Heart Congress, 25 – 28 October 2015, at Sun City. Dr Makoali Makotoko was the organiser of the HeFSSA Congress sessions and compiled a challenging program. All the HeFSSA sessions was well attended.

HeFSSA invested in education by hosting the annual Cardio Update for Non-Cardiologists. Servier was the sponsor with Martin Mpe and Nico van der Merwe as the convenors. Faculty members were Eric Klug, Gideon Visagie, Martin Mpe, Ronnie Jardine, Brian Vezi, Nico van der Merwe and Elsabe de Kock (subject of Euthanasia: Where are we in 2015?).

The feedback was positive for the program, faculty and venue. A record 175 delegates attended the meeting and asked for more!!!

HF Travel Award and Fellows Education

HeFSSA has established the annual “HeFSSA Travel Award” to help enhance local expertise and interest in heart failure in South Africa. We hope that knowledge gained will be shared through appropriate channels with colleagues.  Award or half of award will still be awarded.

PASCAR HF collaboration

KS has a Tanzania (2day) symposium planned for HF.

PASCAR Company Support

TL proposes that HeFSSA expand focus to include ultrasound and diagnostic (Roche) companies. He will assist GN to ID and introduction

HeFSSA Patient empowerment

The launch of the MyHF- SA app has been very successful. The app was launched at all the HeFSSA GP workshops and pamphlets were provided to all attendees. MyHF pamphlets & booklets which provide comprehensive information are being distributed by Servier representatives to doctors and some pharmacies. The above was also available at the Servier stand at the SA Heart Congress.

Patient Advocacy / Advocacy groups

Controversial subject with limited previous success e.g. PACE. Starting a HF group will be tough as studies shows that these types of meetings had little impact (hard to judge)

Research

No current formal research that members are engaged in.

Measures to Manage Chronic HF

KT committed to produce draft before end 2015.

Closed with thanks. EK
