Heart disease, diabetes, and stroke conference

The Pan African Society of Cardiology (PASCAR) and the Uganda Heart Association convened for the third multidisciplinary conference on heart disease, diabetes, and stroke in Africa in Kampala, Uganda on 27 - 30 May 2011. Prof Karen Sliwa attended this meeting as one of the faculty members. The congress was very well organized and well attended by cardiologists from Africa, USA, Australia and Europe. Several lectures related to diagnosis and management of heart failure was presented at the meeting.

European Society of Cardiology (ESC) meeting, Paris, 28th August-1 September 2011:

The international Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Registry which will be done under the auspices of the Heart Failure Association of the ESC in all ESC affiliated countries including South Africa will be presented by Prof. Karen Sliwa. The web-based data entry include a feed-back system to the physician entering the information will commence September 2011.

SA Heart Congress 2011 will be held from 23- 26 October in East London. HeFSSA will contribute with both Prof Karen Sliwa and Prof Sandrine Lecour’s expert input. They are developing a joint HeFSSA and SASCAR symposium on heart failure and a second, more clinical workshop on preventing HF in pregnancies. Prof. Vera Regitz-Zagrosek from the Institute of Gender Research, Herzzentrum Berlin, Germany and Prof. AJ Shah, London, UK as well as local speakers will present in these sessions.

CMS Ivabradine guidance:

The HeFSSA Exco was approached by the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) to give guidance on the use of Ivabradine in the treatment of HF. A formal letter clarifying the Exco’s position was send to the CMS (this document is available to members from the HeFSSA office on request).
